COOL 70's DUDE- Sonny Chiba
I love martial arts films, especially from the 70's. The fighting was pure and raw and no special effects were needed. I won't even bother to watch the martial arts films of today with the exception of the Kill Bill films....I'm so sick of mofos flying through the air and jumping over skyscapers I don't know what to do. We all know that Bruce Lee dominated the 70's kung fu film genre and rightfully so, he was amazing. But there was another cat in the shadows who had a unique style all his own. Sonny Chiba was that man. While Bruce Lee's fighting style was poetry in motion, Sonny Chiba was gangsta, gouging out eyeballs and ripping off balls. Sonny infused street fighting with karate and he never played fair. I didn't discover Sonny's films until around 1999 and when I did, I went out and bought every last film in "The Street Fighter" series. The faces he makes when he fucks up his opponent are hilarious! Sonny continues to appear in films and currently he is best known as Hattori Hanzo from the Kill Bill film series. He also made an appearance in last year's The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift.
*NOTEWORTHY FILMS:
Battles Without Honor and Humanity-1973
The Street Fighter- 1974
The Return of The Street Fighter- 1974
Sister Street Fighter- 1974 (see a pattern here lol)
The Street Fighter's Revenge -1974
